A Journey Through Public Space

The audience takes a seat on a park bench as they walk, implicitly agreeing to take part in a conversation with people from eight different countries. Whispers emerge, environments are described and discussions unfold - all revolving around the public space that should belong to everyone. The pandemic has redefined, regulated and restricted it. But even before that, public space was not equally accessible to all. OUTandDOORS takes a critical look at this space and explores how we can reclaim it.

Through a hybrid collaboration with young creatives from eight countries, an audio experience has been created that is intuitively accessible via an app. OUTandDOORS turns its audience into insiders, allowing them to dive deeper into the urban stage while exploring new perspectives on access, visibility and exclusion.

Instructions

The walk starts either in Düsseldorf (Corneliusplatz, Düsseldorf) or Chemnitz (Chemnitz Penguins, Klosterstraße 10, Chemnitz) and is available at any time via the Storydive app. How does it work?

1. To listen to the audio walk, download the free Storydive app to your smartphone.

2. The audio walk OUTandDOORS - Düsseldorf or OUTandDOORS - Chemnitz can be downloaded in advance at home via the app (to save mobile data).

3. Before you start: charge your phone and don’t forget your headphones!

4. Off you go! Go to the starting point of the audio walk (which is also displayed in the App).

Accessibility: Thanks to the user-friendly app developed by the startup Storydive, the audio walk is permanently available for freeand can be experienced without any prior technical knowledge. All you need is a smartphone and headphones. The route is fully accessible in both Düsseldorf and Chemnitz. On scheduled dates, accompanying guides will be available for assistance.

Hybrid: OUTandDOORS was initiated together with the Hans and Marlene Farmont Foundation and brought together young creatives (ages 18-30) from eight countries and nine cities worldwide—Chiba, Reading, Warsaw, Moscow, Düsseldorf, Chongqing, Chemnitz, Haifa, and Palermo—in a digital collaboration. Through ZOOM sessions, participants gained insight into storytelling and sound design and learned what it means to work internationally and collaboratively.

Audio-Based: OUTandDOORS is a binaural 360° audio experience—its sounds blend with the real soundscape of the city, creating an auditory augmented reality.

Venues & Awards

OUTandDOORS is currently available in Düsseldorf and Chemnitz and will be expanded to more cities in the coming years, including Chiba, Reading, Warsaw, Moscow, Düsseldorf, Chongqing, Chemnitz, Haifa, and Palermo.
