Wie man später von uns denken wird
An encounter with Carl von Ossitzky and ourselves
Carl von Ossietzky (Hamburg, 1889 – Berlin, 1938) passionately advocated for democracy as a journalist during the Weimar Republic. With the power of his pen, he waged a fierce battle against the rising fascism and paid with his life. In a European cooperation project, artists and journalists come together to approach Ossietzky’s life story from a contemporary perspective. Together, they engage in a dialogue at the St. Johannis Cultural Church about press and freedom of speech, about democracy, and the urge to raise one’s voice. One thing is certain: Ossietzky’s fight against fascism remains relevant today.
Accompanied by choir and organ music, as well as light and video elements, an immersive experience is created, making the shadows of Europe’s past tangible in our present time.

Audio-based: A unique aspect of this performance is that, for the most part, a voice-over invites the audience both to self-reflect and to engage in dialogue with each other.
Accessible: The performance provides low-threshold access to historical circumstances during the Nazi era as well as a fundamental exploration of democracy and politics.
